Keep Your Fridge Neat and Organized

by Tom Carroll

Do you - or another family member - spend too much time trying to find things in your refrigerator? Are condiments found everywhere? Are you creating a breeding ground for unintended science experiments with forgotten food? Getting into a routine with better refrigerator organization can help you stay on top of the food you have, reduce your grocery bills and even facilitate healthier eating. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Invest in Organizers. The best way to keep something from getting lost in the back of your fridge is to invest in organizing containers. A Lazy Susan can help you access items often pushed to the back. Soda organizers can optimize space, giving you even more room.

Line Your Shelves. Invest in shelf liners. Thin silicone mats are the best material for the job. It’s easier to remove liners to wash than to clean the inside of the fridge.

Use Your Vacuum to Help Clean Drawers. The mess left behind by produce in your refrigerator drawers can be frustrating. The easiest way to get rid of the debris is to clean it first using your hand-held vac or vacuum cleaner attachment. Then you can take the drawer out without making a bigger mess.

Wipe Jars and Bottles to Prevent Sticky Messes. Don’t you hate those sticky rings left by leaky bottles and jars in your fridge? Before you put these things back on the shelf, wipe them down with a damp cloth. This simple step will save you hours of cleaning dried, sticky messes from shelves.

Organize Based on Purpose or Type. It can be helpful to catalog your refrigerator based on the types of food. For example, keep all your condiments together in the door. Put dairy items on the same shelf, produce in the same drawer and beverages on the lower shelves. That way, you won’t lose things because they weren’t where you were looking.

Take Time Every Week to Toss Anything Questionable. Schedule a time every week to go through the questionable items in your refrigerator and throw away anything that’s expired or seems ready to go. If you push yourself to keep up with this chore, things won’t have a chance to get out of hand.
